Global markets experienced relative calm today after yesterday’s wave of volatility and strong pressures , coinciding with the return of diplomatic efforts to the forefront on more than one front.
Performance of US stock indices and oil
As of the time of this report and about an hour before the close of the Wall Street session, the performance of US stock indices was characterized by calm and limited movements; the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.29% to 51,360.88 points , while the S&P 500 rose slightly by 0.04% to 7,708.80 points , the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.04% to 26,945.93 points , and the Nasdaq 100 also recorded an increase of 0.04% to 30,482.18 points , while the Russell 2000 fell by 0.09% to 2,836.07 points .
As for the energy markets, they continued their clear rise; US WTI oil rose by 2.48% to $94.45 a barrel , while Brent crude rose by 3.24% to $106.42 a barrel .
Thus, today’s trading reflects a state of relative calm in the stock markets despite the continued strength of oil prices , following the volatility and concerns that dominated yesterday’s session.
Reports indicate that talks between American and Iranian negotiators are continuing in New York, aimed at reaching a gradual path that could lead to ending the war. This includes discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for easing US economic sanctions on Iran. These developments are taking place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump welcomed his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to the White House, where the two sides discussed trade, artificial intelligence, security and geopolitical issues, amid Chinese calls to strengthen dialogue and avoid confrontation between the world’s two largest economies.
These developments have not yet provided final solutions to the outstanding issues, but they have helped to calm some of the geopolitical concerns and stop the sharp decline that the markets witnessed in the previous session .
In the bond market, pressure remained evident on longer maturities, with the yield on the 30-year US Treasury note climbing to around 5.45%, its highest level since 2004 , while the 10-year yield touched around 5.16%, its highest since 2007. In contrast, short-term maturities performed relatively calmer, mitigating the earlier market pressures.
Therefore, today's session can be described as more of a cooling-off period than a complete shift in market direction . Stocks and bonds showed some stability after the previous sharp fluctuations, while oil prices and long-term yields remain a source of pressure and inflationary risks.
In summary, US-Iranian diplomatic efforts and US-China talks have given markets a chance to catch their breath, and this calm may continue in the coming days if further signs of progress in negotiations emerge. However, the continued rise in oil prices and bond yields means that uncertainty is not over, and any political setback or renewed escalation could quickly bring volatility back to the markets.
