Rising bond yields increase borrowing costs, while US data signals a slowdown in demand.
US markets face a more complex equation as Treasury yields continue to rise to levels not seen for many years, gradually shifting pressure from the bond market to the cost of financing for the government, businesses, and individuals, while economic data released today showed some signs of a slowdown in demand and the labor market.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note is hovering around 5.2% , after reaching its highest level since 2007, while longer-term bond yields have also climbed, with the 30-year yield approaching 5.6% . This comes amid persistent concerns about inflation, rising energy prices, geopolitical risks, and expectations that interest rates will remain high.
The cost of financing is passed on to the consumer.
The problem is not just the high cost of borrowing by the US government; higher bond yields are reflected in the cost of financing throughout the economy.
The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is currently hovering around 7.3% , indicating continued pressure on household purchasing power and the US housing market. Daily data shows the 30-year mortgage rate at approximately 7.37% , up about 31 basis points in a single week.
The cost of financing cars, credit cards, and corporate loans also remains high, which means that the impact of monetary policy goes beyond the Federal Reserve's decision itself, as markets, through rising bond yields, are imposing tighter financial conditions on the economy.
Job vacancies are decreasing
Conversely, today's labor market data showed signs of slowing demand for labor.
The number of job vacancies, according to the JOLTS report, fell to 7.079 million in August , compared to 7.335 million after revising the July reading. The reading also came in below market expectations of 7.225 million jobs.
But the picture is not entirely negative, as employment rose to 5.192 million , while layoffs and dismissals fell to 1.641 million .
This suggests that the labor market is not yet experiencing a widespread wave of job losses, but companies are becoming more cautious about adding new jobs.
Consumer confidence falls to its lowest level since 2014
The most obvious indication of the pressures felt by the American consumer came from the Conference Board's consumer confidence index.
The index fell by 6.7 points during September to 81.9 points , its lowest level since 2014, while markets had expected a reading of 89.2 points.
Consumers' view of current business conditions has also turned negative for the first time since September 2024, with their assessment of labor market conditions declining and growing concern about the coming months.
A more difficult equation for the Federal Reserve
The problem is that the US economy is currently facing two opposing forces.
On the one hand, rising energy prices and inflationary concerns are pushing bond yields and financing costs higher and limiting the Federal Reserve's ability to ease monetary policy.
On the other hand, some indicators of the real economy have begun to show signs of weakness, whether through a decline in job vacancies or a sharp drop in consumer confidence.
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates this month by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%–4.00% , while markets, according to today's market data, were pricing in a probability of nearly 70% for an additional increase in October .
The rise in bond yields is no longer just a movement within fixed-income markets, but has become a broad increase in the cost of money within the US economy .
The government is borrowing long-term at returns exceeding 5%, mortgages have exceeded 7%, and financing for households and businesses has become more expensive, while job data and consumer confidence are beginning to show the first signs of strain.
Stock indices showed mixed performance amid anticipation of US-Iranian negotiations.
For these reasons, US stock indices are moving mixed and limited today , as markets attempt to balance the pressures from rising bond yields and borrowing costs with the support some technology stocks are receiving. As of approximately 10:18 AM New York time , the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 0.17% at 51,393 points , while the S&P 500 was virtually unchanged at 7,683 points , and the Nasdaq Composite was trading almost flat at 26,822 points . The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note remained high near 5.08% at that time, continuing to weigh on stock valuations and borrowing costs.
Meanwhile, markets are closely watching developments in the US-Iranian talks , following continued separate communications between the two sides and mediators in an attempt to reach a revised version of the proposals, end the conflict, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, uncertainty remains high, particularly after US President Donald Trump confirmed that he had not offered Iran any sanctions relief in exchange for ending the war.
The US dollar remains relatively high compared to its levels earlier in September , supported by rising bond yields and expectations of continued tight monetary policy, along with demand for the dollar amid geopolitical uncertainty. The dollar index has risen by about 2.8% from its recent September low , having surpassed its 100-week moving average near 100.7 points, although there have been some signs of a slowdown in the upward momentum during recent trading sessions.
Therefore, the markets are currently facing a set of conflicting factors: high financing costs and strong bond yields on the one hand, versus some signs of an economic slowdown and the continuation of US-Iranian negotiations on the other , which explains the volatility and lack of a unified direction for US stock indices and other markets as a whole.
